Perspective on Diversity and Culture

Culture is......
Social behavior specific to groups of people
Behavior that contributes to differences

Diversity is......
Differences
Unique qualities specific to a group or groups of people

These definitions are broad enough that they do not omit or exclude anything specifically. However, they are not clear cut in that they are not specific. They leave room for question.
Diversity is essentially just that differences and all of the things that make people uniques. Diversity includes but is not limited to, race/ethnicity, religion, and gender, etc., again all of the things that make us different.

Culture is who we are and the things that makeup who we are. Culture is the music we listen to, the way we dress, the food we eat, and more.

Other people definitions and ideas about culture and diversity are pretty much on the same page. I feel that limiting the definitions and making the definitions more specific would take away and limit all possible meanings of the word.

  1. Haleema,
Your post and the explanations you offer show truly what diversity is. Everyone having a differing idea of what diversity is, is just that, diversity. This all stems from who we are and where we come from. The make up of how we developed into the individuals we are and our thoughts is our culture. Without culture we do not have our diversity.

  2. Haleema,

Adding to or taking away words from the definitions for culture and diversity would definitely limit the overall meanings of both words. Culture encompasses language, beliefs, religion, expectations, and so much more. Culture is who we are and where we belong. Diversity is the acceptance of the differences, the gifts, the individuality of groups and people. Diversity is the basis of society. The two words must coexist in today's world to maintain peace and harmony in society, communities, families, and schools.

    Wishing you well,
    Donna

  3. Hi Haleena,Great post. People do have different meaning of what they think the definitions are. That is what make everyone unique because people have their own definition of what culture and diversity mean. Although, everyone is on the same page, people tends to add something new that we may have not even thought about. We must respect and understands ones culture and diversity if we want to keep the peace. Great post

  4. Haleema,

I agree that diversity includes many different characteristics that makes each one of us unique. It is this uniqueness that sets individuals apart from others. How boring would the world be if everyone thought the same, looked the same, believed in the same ideas, etc.?? The same can be said about culture. Without culture, the world would be one dull place.
